What we do:

For new clients, we do a one hour in-home interview, meet your pet(s), fill out profiles on them, learn their routines, likes, and dislikes. . .and things like “Where’s the food, litter box , leashes, and cleaning supplies?” At that time, we schedule our visits and obtain a key.  Then when you are gone, we come in and take care of two of your  most important possessions—your home and your “babies”.  For returning clients, all you do is call and tell us when you’re going to be gone and your pet care worries are a thing of the past.

Services included in the basic visit:

  • Walk your dog(s)
  • Extra "scritches" for your kitties
  • Bring in mail & newspapers
  • Water Plants & gardens
  • Light grooming
  • Yard clean up
  • Litter box care
  • Birdfeeders  filled
  • Grandfather clocks wound

Additional Services:

                                                                                                                                                                     "Boots"-in-a-box
  • Transport to/from groomers and routine veterinary check-ups.
  • Overnight stays.

Note:  All the kitty photos on this site are the feline supervisors of Ultimate Pet Sitters.  We are a "kitty" household, but take care of all kinds of critters.  The most unusual we've ever had--a pair of tadpoles.  The most we've taken care of for one client:  3 horses, 2 large dogs, 6 small dogs, 2 cats, two pygmy goats, and three rabbits.

CHOOSING A PET SITTER

by

Peggy Mikkelsen

Owner, Peggy Mikkelsen and
"Boots", Chief Kitty Supervisor

In this world of increasing specialization, it is no wonder that specialization has worked its way down to whom you’ll have care for your pets while you are away.  Whether you are gone for just overnight or for an extended vacation, you want to know that your animal companions are properly cared for.  For years, a pet sitter was a neighbor or family member or kid down the block that looked in on pets, making sure they had food and water, and to be let in and out on a regular basis.  Nowadays, with families not always close by and everyone busier than ever with all kinds of activities, you’re better off hiring a certified professional to come and care for Rover and Fluffy.  Hiring such an individual can bring a lot of peace of mind and alleviate worry about how your pets are faring in your absence.  But how do you choose such an individual?

First, when looking for a good sitter, have the prospective person come to your home to meet your pets prior to the time you’ll be gone.  Notice how this person interacts with your pets.  Does he or she make an effort from the beginning to learn your pets’ names?  Or is she more interested in your home’s décor?  How do your pets react to the person? How does the sitter comport him or herself?  Does the person present him/herself as a professional?  Does he/she take careful notes of instructions about each animal—its feeding schedule, what food it eats and how much, what exercise is to be provided?   If you have exotic animals such as snakes or lizards, or small pocket pets such as rats or hamsters, is the prospective sitter squeamish about them?  Do you have large animals (horses, goats, llamas)?  What is their experience with large animals?  Does he/she have a contract to be signed detailing exactly what services are to be provided, who assumes any liabilities, and full disclosure of the charges?   Does he/she have liability insurance?  Is the person bonded?  Do they have references?

Also, really good pet sitters provide additional services at no additional cost.  Daily brushing and combing of your pets, yard and litterbox clean up, bringing in mail and newspapers, watering plants and gardens, filling bird feeders, putting out trash for pickup on trash day, opening and closing drapes and blinds, alternating lights to give your home a more lived in look are some of the services normally included.   However, doing such tasks as taking a dog to the groomer or for a routine veterinary visit are not part of the packet and do entail additional charges.

Things to think about when deciding to hire a professional pet sitter:  You are hiring someone to take care of two of your most precious possessions while you are away:  your pets and your home.  Going for the lowest cost is not necessarily in your best interest.  Look for someone who genuinely cares for animals and someone whom you will feel comfortable coming into your home while you are away.  Once you have found the right sitter for your pets, you can relax and enjoy your time away knowing that they and your home are getting the best care possible.
